This Russian study conducted a comparative phytochemical analysis of noni (Morinda citrifolia) leaves, roots, and fruits sourced from Ghana. The research found that all three plant parts contain alkaloids and flavonoids, while anthraquinones were only present in the roots. Tannins were found in both roots and leaves. Among all plant parts, the roots showed the highest concentration of bioactive compounds, making them particularly promising for medicinal applications.
The study adhered to standards of the Russian Pharmacopoeia, confirming the pharmaceutical-grade quality of the raw materials. It emphasized the potential for developing herbal remedies and dietary supplements from different parts of the noni plant, particularly the roots. The authors call for further development of phytopreparations using extracts enriched with biologically active substances from noni.
