This evidence-based review comprehensively analyzes the health benefits and safety of Morinda citrifolia (noni) fruit using animal studies, human trials, and case reports. The research highlights noni’s broad pharmacological activity, including anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, hepatoprotective, immunostimulatory, antitumor, and hypolipidemic effects. Studies involving animals demonstrated efficacy against conditions like dyslipidemia, alopecia, hypertension, and viral infections. In human studies, noni was tested in diverse contexts—from reducing blood pressure and cholesterol to managing symptoms of overactive bladder, periodontal disease, and postoperative nausea—mostly showing positive outcomes with minimal side effects.
Despite these promising benefits, the paper also details five case reports of adverse reactions, including acute hepatitis, liver failure, and skin pigmentation, primarily linked to prolonged high-dose consumption. These rare events emphasize the need for caution, especially when noni is taken over extended periods or alongside other medications. Overall, the review concludes that noni has significant therapeutic potential but should be used with monitoring to ensure safety in long-term or high-dose use.
